A note from Stephanie, Caroline’s daughter:
My mother had a lot of series she was proud of, but when readers wrote to tell her which books they came back to again and again, the Bride Brigade came up more than almost anything else. She built it with a particular kind of reader in mind — someone who wanted romance and a happy ending, but who also wanted to see women take their futures into their own hands and build something real together.
I think that’s exactly what she delivered. Seven times over.
This post is my way of introducing — or reintroducing — this series to you. All seven books are complete and available now. My mother finished what she started, which is one of the many things I loved about her.
Welcome to Tarnation, Texas
The Bride Brigade series is set in Tarnation, Texas, a small frontier town with a lively community, a cast of recurring characters, and enough gossip and goodwill to fill seven love stories with room to spare.
The premise my mother built the series around is this: a group of carefully chosen women travel together to Tarnation, seeking fresh starts and the possibility of love. They arrive as near-strangers bound by a shared leap of faith. By the time the series is complete, they are something far richer — a community of women who show up for each other, again and again, across all seven books.
The shared setting means that characters you meet in Josephine reappear in Angeline, and characters from Angeline show up again in Cassandra. Reading the series in order gives you the pleasure of watching a whole town come alive, one story at a time. My mother loved that kind of interconnected storytelling. She loved the feeling of a place that keeps giving.
The Seven Brides
1. Josephine
Josephine Nailor flees an oppressive hometown and an overbearing father, only to find her wariness of powerful men tested by the town’s mayor, Michael Buchanan — a man who turns out to be nothing like the men she’s spent her life fearing.
2. Angeline
After a brutal attack and a rejection that would have broken a lesser woman, Angeline Chandler arrives in Tarnation ready for a second chance — and finds it as a nanny for widowed minister Grady McIntyre, navigating gossip and prejudice alongside a slowly growing love.
3. Cassandra
Cassandra Bradford is pretending to be something she isn’t — a polished lady in search of a wealthy husband — and so, it turns out, is the wealthy rancher Samuel Drummond, who is hiding his fortune to avoid exactly the kind of woman Cassandra is pretending to be.
4. Ophelia
Ophelia Shipp wants a respectable husband and a fresh start, and Tarnation obliges — except that the man she finds herself drawn to is Elias Kendrick, self-made businessman and owner of the saloon and opera house, a combination that tests every definition of “respectable” she brought with her from the East.
5. Rachel
Rachel Ross carries a secret from her past in Virginia that she hoped the distance of Texas would bury, but former Pinkerton agent Zane Evans is not a man who misses much — and when the truth comes out, both of them have to decide what forgiveness actually costs.
6. Lorraine
Lorraine Stuart fled an unwanted marriage to find a man who could appreciate her real self — including the writing talent she’s kept hidden — but the man she keeps clashing with is Grant Pettigrew, the stubborn owner of the Tarnation Gazette, who has very definite opinions about writers and writing.
7. Prudence
Prudence Lynch is a midwife and folk healer who wants nothing more than to be accepted by the community she serves, but Dr. Riley Gaston dismisses everything she knows — until a crisis hits Tarnation and the two of them have to set aside their rivalry to save the people they both love.
The Series Is Complete — and Ready for You
All seven books are finished, published, and waiting. You can read them one at a time, savoring each woman’s story, or work through the whole series in an extended reading stretch — which is, if you ask me, an excellent way to spend a week.
My mother finished what she started. Every promise she made to her readers across these seven books, she kept. Seven women. Seven second chances. Seven happy endings, all set in the town she built and the community she loved to write.
I hope Tarnation feels like home to you, the way it always did to her.
You can find the full series — including a bundle option — on Amazon. The complete reading order for all of my mother’s series is at carolineclemmons.com/reading-order/.
